About World Sun Day
World Sun Day originated from the growing environmental movement and the search for alternative sources of energy. The United States president at the time, Jimmy Carter, strongly advocated for renewable energy in light of the pressing energy crisis. This advocacy brought to light the idea of Sun Day and it was appointed by the U.S. Congress in 1977.
In 1978, United States celebrated the first official Sun Day. The celebration of Sun Day became an international event in 1994 to emphasise the benefits of solar energy. Despite not being recognised as an official annual holiday, we continue to celebrate Sun Day alongside enthusiasts and environmentalists who advocate for solar energy and a more sustainable future.
Fun fact: World Sun Day was inspired by the success of Denis Hayes coordination of Earth Day in 1970!
