The Collin’s Dictionary has chosen ‘brat’ as their word of the year. The word is characterised by a confident, independent attitude. While the word may have traditionally referred to a misbehaving child, the word reflects a broader sense of entitlement and disregard for the rules. I also believe it reflects the frustrations and anxieties of dealing with a world that often feels isolating and competitive.
My latest project involves matching 27 evocative Japanese words that nourish the soul to an essential oil. I cannot wait to share with you the complete list, which will be unveiled in May 2025 at the book launch of my latest book Kotodama of Scent – 27 beautiful Japanese words and essential oils to nourish the soul.
I propose an alternative word of the year, amae (pronounced - ah-mah-eh), which is a uniquely Japanese concept that literally translates to ‘a sweet dependence and desire to be loved and cared for.’
It is a much-needed antidote to the ‘brat’ attitude of our times. In a world grappling with uncertainty and anxiety, embracing amae – allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and seek support, and to nurture our connections. This can foster a sense of collective resilience and empathy that is much needed.
While ‘brat’ emphasises individualism and self-reliance, amae encourages the expression of vulnerability as it is a natural human experience which in turn leads to a deeper connection with others. In this way amae is a powerful concept that encourages us to support each other, to help build stronger communities, and to navigate challenges with compassion. In a world that often feels isolating and competitive, embracing amae could be a step towards a more harmonious and supportive society that emphasises the interconnectedness of all humans and the importance of fostering interdependence without fostering entitlement.
The essential oil that embodies the essence of amae is geranium. The sweet floral herbaceous aroma of geranium evokes feelings of comfort and care, in much the same way amae seeks comfort and care. Geranium creates a safe space for nurturing and fostering a sense of safety, which also aligns with the qualities of amae that fosters a sense of dependence and trust.
