Spring has sprung! Why not say hello to the new season with an internal spring clean – (no mop required!).

We’re heading into the warmer months, but all that time we may have spent in winter hibernation curled up on the couch with our comfort foods and favourite TV shows may have left us feeling a little 20150828_110726stagnant and heavy.

In the springtime, we often cleanse and clear out our cupboards and home – the same should also go for our bodies. Spring is the perfect time to honour and treat yourself to a health & beauty reboot!

What is detoxification?

Detoxification is basically just cleaning out the toxins from your body – it’s a little like giving your car a service or home a spring clean!

How do I know if I need to detox?

Incorporating some gentle detoxifying practices into your life is beneficial for almost anyone. But things like pesky headaches, fatigue, fuzzy memory, bad breath, digestive complaints, skin problems, insomnia and overwhelming allergies, sensitivities and intolerances are all messages from your body that a detox may be especially beneficial.

Why should I detox?

Our bodies possess wonderful, natural self-cleaning processes. However, our modern lifestyles, which can be a little sedentary and overwhelmed with processed, microwaved meals, plastics, pesticides, heavy metals, preservative-laced foods and air pollution can make things difficult. So, it’s great to give our body a bit of a helping hand once in a while to help it release the chemicals and toxic build up that can hinder our health! So how do I do it?

Read on for tips on how to detox your body & your mind…

Eat…

For a really effective detox it’s important to reduce the amount of toxins we ingest and to improve our elimination. This can be achieved through some super simple dietary changes!

To help minimise toxin load, try to avoid highly processed foods, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Increase your fibre intake by enjoying lots of fresh (preferably organic) fruit and veg! Cruciferous vegies like cabbage, kale and broccoli are great detoxifying choices as are all your beautiful leafy greens.  (See the table below for some of star detox foods). Drinking your vegies in the form of greengreenjuices and smoothies is also a wonderful way to alkalise your body and flood it with super nourishing vitamins, mineral and chlorophyll. (Tip: try sticking to mostly vegies – just add in small amounts of low glycemic fruits for taste.)

Ensuring you have a healthy gut lining is super important too as this will prevent any toxins from sneaking through your gut wall into your bloodstream. To heal and seal your gut look to greens and fermented, probiotic & prebiotic-rich foods like coconut yoghurt, kombucha, and sauerkraut. Onions, asparagus and garlic are also good options!

Drink…

Water is another amazing detoxifier that will help flush out toxins from your system! We suggest drinking pure, filtered water so as not to be introducing any of the nasties found in tap water into your body.

You can also boost your water intake and add a powerful detoxifying punch with herbal teas!

Brush…

Have you tried dry body brushing? It’s all the rave at the moment & with good reason. The skin is the largest organ of the body and plays a big role in detoxification. To help exfoliate dead skin cells, boost circulation and remove cellular waste try carving out 5 minutes of your morning to give dry body brushing a go! Using a natural bristle brush start at your toes and use large gentle strokes toward your heart. It’s also really nice to use this time to be kind to your body and embrace and appreciate it regardless of the way it looks.

Massage…

Who doesn’t love a good massage?! They feel amazing, and they’re amazing for you as well! Bathe…

Regular bathing is essential to cleanse the skin of the toxins it has released and to open the pores to eliminate more. For the ultimate detox indulgence, try an Epsom salt bath! Epsom salts are rich in magnesium and are detoxification promoting powerhouses. If you’ve overindulged or are feeling stodgy add 2 heaped tablespoons of Detox Bath Soak to bath water and soak for 20 minutes.

The Epsom salts, green clay and detoxifying essential oils of grapefruit, juniper, geranium will really help ease your muscles, draw out toxins and aid your body’s natural detoxification processes.

And that means right now – not when you’ve found the perfect job or partner, lost weight or cleared your skin. Love and accept yourself as you are right now in this moment. When negative thoughts about yourself or your life arise try not to buy into them – they are just thoughts and more often than not are totally untrue and baseless, simply acknowledge them and let them go. You don’t need to waste your precious mental energy beating yourself up. Try being your own best friend instead!

Ditch perfectionism, embrace your diversity, pay yourself a compliment every now and then and make time to reconnect with things that make you feel loved, radiant and alive!
Detoxing physically will definitely help enhance your outer beauty, but it’s also important to find ways to make yourself light up beneath the surface – find what makes you FEEL beautiful. Appreciate yourself and all that you are!
