Last week we introduced you to our movement #everydayaromatherapy and this week we’d like to continue the conversation. On Monday we celebrated International Day of Happiness, so this week that’s what we’re all about (no Wiggles pun intended).

Often people don’t associate aromatherapy with happiness, but there’s a concept called scent memory, perhaps you have heard of it, or maybe you haven’t.

Our nose is the strongest sense in our body and therefore often our sense of smell is the first thing that connects us to our memories, even if we can’t put the scent into words. Certain essential oils evoke joyful memories, though everyone’s will be different. Which essential oil holds happy and joyful memories for you? Maybe you need more of it in your life.

Scent memory is powerful, but if you can’t think of an essential oil these are some common essential oils that are reminiscent or associated with happiness.

How to be Happy

We don’t actually have a tell-all answer for this one, but we can suggest some essential oils and how to use them that we associate with happiness.


Citrus oils

We’re talking lime, lemon, mandarin, sweet orange and grapefruit or for a quick-fix blend use Happy and Calm blend. These citrus oils are uplifting and relieve anxiety. Sweet orange in particular conveys a sense of warmth and joy, energising everyone who smells it.
How to:
Add five drops to a diffuser or oil burner during the day to create an ambience of joy to make you feel uplifted.


Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile has sedative and calming properties, and a calm person is a happy person. The delicate scent of Roman chamomile is harmonising, serene and peaceful, promoting spiritual awareness and inner peace. If you’re after a blend containing Roman chamomile, try our Five Element Water blend to feel tranquil and happy.
How to:
Add five drops to a diffuser or oil burner Roman chamomile by itself or mixed with other essential oils.
Put a few drops on a tissue or handkerchief and place under your pillow for a happy and mellow night’s sleep.


Ylang Ylang

The rich and floral scent of ylang ylang is euphoric, passionate, sensuous and uplifting. This amazing essential oil is said to dispel anger, leaving space for happiness and joy. If you’re after a blend containing ylang ylang, try our Five Element Fire blend to express joy and happiness. If you’re in a balmy mood, trying our Relax Aromatherapy balm containing ylang ylang.
How to:
Add five to seven drops to a diffuser or an oil burner or add it to your skincare and body routine.
Alternatively, put a few drops on a tissue or handkerchief, or our Relax Aromatherapy balm, and keep in your bag or pocket for when needed.
