It is hard to talk about stress in terms of one broad emotion or state of mind. Stress comes in many shapes and sizes and is caused by any number of things. That said, never fear – there are ways to manage stress, no matter what is causing it.
Aromatherapy is a tried and tested holistic means to treating some of the manifestations of stress. In this article, we will specifically address which essential oils may help to calm an over active mind, in dealing with depression or anxiety, with letting go of issues and to strengthen your confidence.
How to choose essential oils
Our brain distinguishes aromas as positive or negative (sometimes, if you have not smelled a scent before, you may not have an existing memory so you will probably feel neutral). When choosing essential oils for yourself, choose one that you absolutely love, something that you can get excited about and will put a smile on your face. If you don’t like the smell of an essential oil or you are not sure about it, choose another one. You always want to feel a positive effect from an essential oil or blend. When making your own blend, feel free to choose your favourite oils from each category to achieve a multifaceted positive effect.
Relaxing and calming an over active mind
If your mind is racing and you are finding it hard to calm your thoughts grounding, comforting, calming essential oils are your best option. These oils will take you out of your head and plant you back on the ground. Try a blend of two or three of your favourite scents from the below list and sit in a quiet corner away from distractions. Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to release any stressful thoughts.
Try any of the below oils:
- Woody – vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood
- Resins – frankincense
- Herbaceous – patchouli, clary sage
- Floral – lavender
Depression or anxiety
It isn’t always easy to bring ourselves out of a state of depression or anxiety and it does often take a lot of work to change the situations that may be creating this problem. Aromatherapy can help to uplift you emotionally, energising you and giving you a sense of harmony. Blend a couple of your favourites from the list below while doing something you love and makes you happy.
- Citrus – grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin, sweet orange
- Herbacious – Roman chamomile, cypress, clary sage, blue mallee eucalyptus, broad-leaved peppermint eucalyptus, lemon scented eucalyptus, lemon myrtle, lemongrass, peppermint, basil
Moving on and letting go
Often times something is said, or something happens that we find difficult to move on from. This could be anything from the death of a close friend or family member, the loss of a job, a mean comment by someone and we just can’t stop thinking, worrying – we get stuck. Juniper berry is known to purify and drive away negative influences and thoughts. Blend a few drops of juniper berry with an essential oil associated with any other emotions you might be feeling.
Confidence and heart ache
Heart break feels endless – the loss of a friend or family member, a break up, empty nest all pull at our heart and can leave us feeling insecure and unmotivated.
Strengthen your heart chakra and build your confidence again with the high vibrational energy of rose, jasmine and ylang ylang essential oils. These beautiful florals will help to balance your heart chakra and are uplifting and euphoric to comfort you when your heart aches.
Bergamot is great for confidence and performance. When you need to speak up or go for an interview, inhale deeply straight from the bergamot bottle.
Creating a blend
If you are thinking the above descriptions are all applicable on some days, select your favourite oil from each category and make your own unique blend in your diffuser. Just remember, stronger smells require less drops to prevent overpowering the blend. For example, you may only need 1 drop of patchouli to 10 drops of sweet orange so the 2 oils blend together in harmony. In fact, try thinking of blending essential oils like a musical harmony, no one voice should be too much louder than any other – they should sing together as one new voice.
One last aromatherapy tip – when choosing many different essential oils for your new blend, try including bergamot. Bergamot is known as the great blender, it beautifully brings together the other oils, making them mingle harmoniously into one new aroma.
Enjoy blending and creating a more calming, stress down day!
