Hi!
Firstly I must apologise for a rather late newsletter, I do hope you are well.
As usual we have been very busy creating an exciting range of new products.
Recently we introduced an organically certified, cold-pressed coconut oil. It is simply divine! We love it so much we have come up with three new exquisite products, coconut cream body balm, coconut crush body polish and coconut hair wax. With winter around the corner these products are perfect!
Now I did promise to tell you about the amazing trip we had to Morocco and Egypt. It was the most rewarding experience that we have ever had as travellers. I use the word traveller rather than tourist because the tour company we used, Intrepid, went out of their way to ensure that we could experience the real culture of the country. For me, travel is about being able to experience the generosity and hospitality of the people that you meet.
We travelled in a small group of 12 and went to places that were off the regular tourist track, we got to meet the locals, stayed in their houses and ate with their families. Mind you it is not five star travel – you really have to feel okay about roughing it at times. I must admit I was initially apprehensive of some of the hotels that we stayed in – but then it’s not that often that you are able to sit on the roof top of a hotel at midnight with the owner who speaks very little English, sip mint tea and solve the world’s problems.
Floating down the Nile in a felluca was an awesome experience, however at dusk the mozzies came out to feast on us. That was when we put our Citronella Body Spray to the test, and boy, did it work wonders! So much so that everyone else on the boat preferred to use it rather than the horrible, smelly, chemical-based repellants.
There is so much more that I could talk about, but I want to know about your travel adventures. In a paragraph or two or want you to tell us about your last exciting trip and the people that you met. We will give a free bottle of Jet Setter Aromatic Mist to the first 50 entrants – all you have to do is email us you travel adventures! By the way we will love to publish the two best travel stories in the next newsletter.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner don’t forget to give Mum a huge big hug and spoil her with special treats from Perfect Potion.
One last thing, a huge thank you to everyone that said they preferred the newsletter to be emailed – we have been able to donate $3,500 to the Wilderness Society of Australia because of the money we have saved in postage and envelopes.

Coconut Oil
We are so excited to stock a coconut oil that is virgin cold pressed and organically certified. The divine smelling oil comes from the South Pacific region and we are so pleased to be supporting fair trade for a fair price policy. The organisation from whom we purchase the coconut oil supports small family units and local communities.
The fruits from the coconut palm – Cocos nucifera have long played a vital role in the tropic regions of the world as a food and a pharmaceutical.
Now let me tell you a little about this delightful virgin cold pressed coconut oil. The term “virgin cold pressed oil” is usually associated with the production of olive oil. In this case it refers to the naturally processed oil from the fresh coconut meat, which has not undergone any chemical or synthetic processing. The temperature during the extraction process does not exceed 60°C. This ensures that the trace amounts of vitamin E and tocopherol are not destroyed. Although they are not a high percentage constituent in coconut oil, they are critical for long-term stability and protection against rancidity.
Coconut oil has a unique fatty acid profile. It is the highest source of saturated fats (92%) as well as the highest source of saturated medium chain triglycerides (62%). Furthermore over 50% of these medium chain triglycerides are made up of lauric acid, the most important fatty acid in building and maintaining the body. The only other source of lauric acid in such concentrations is mother’s milk.
Nutritionally saturated fats have in the past had a bad rap. However they are very important for health and wellbeing. Saturated fats are used in the body as an important source of energy and an integral part of the cell membrane structure. Short to medium chain fatty acids are more water soluble than longer chain fatty acids and thus require less energy for the body to absorb and utilize. They are freely absorbed into the bloodstream and are thus are an important source energy, raising the metabolism of the body. Furthermore, this reduced metabolic load allows the liver to optimise its detoxifying main functions of detoxification, bile production and regulating blood sugar levels.
Short and medium chain fatty acids in organic virgin coconut oil such as Caprylic (C8), Capric (C10) and Lauric (C12) have been found to have strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoal properties and are essential building blocks in boosting the bodies immune system. These essential fatty acids have been shown to be active in combating Candida Albicans.
The moderate consumption of saturated fats has shown to assist in regulating the healthy functioning of the Thyroid gland and combating hypothyroid-like symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, water-retention that may arise through a modern diet high in polyunsaturated fats.
Shorter chain fatty acids have a lower caloric value per gram of fat and may assist in weight loss due to the lower consumption of calories when taking in the daily recommended intake of fats from the healthy functioning of the body. The consumption of shorter chain fatty acids also assists in weight loss for their ability to help people feel satiated.
Coconut oil is highly heat resistant and will only begin to oxidise at temperatures of 198°C, therefore it is ideal for cooking, baking and frying.
For many years the vegetable oil industry and other related politically-biased agricultural groups have been telling us that saturated fats are unhealthy. People need to realize that it is the amount and/or the type of saturated or unsaturated fat that can potentially be detrimental. All fats have something beneficial to offer the body, except for non-naturally occurring fats, like the trans-fatty acids. It would therefore be more correct to say that the only ‘bad’ fat is trans-fat or processed fat. Little focus has been given to the benefits from the different types of saturated fats: short, medium, and long chain fatty acids. Contrary to conventional belief, saturated fats are in fact very beneficial.
Topically coconut oil has traditionally been used as a skin moisturizer, sunscreen, for the treatment of head lice, for ulcers, wounds, burns and in the treatment of cholera.
Many massage oils used today are composed of light polyunsaturated oils such as sweet almond, safflower and sunflower. These oils are very light and tend to oxidise easily. Coconut oil is advantageous not only because of its stability and that it is readily absorbed into the skin, but also for its immune enhancing and antimicrobial effects. For this it would be excellent to add tea tree or lavender oil to coconut oil as a base.
Coconut oil has excellent softening and moisturising properties – it is recommended for treating dry skin and calming sensitive and delicate skins. It is excellent in hair care products for dry, devitalised and damaged hair.
Bath recipes
With winter fast approaching, you may want to try some divine bath recipes that use coconut oil from Judy Chapman’s Spa: bath blends for your home.
Coconut fizz
This is such a fun and luscious treat!½ cup cornflour
½ cup citric acid
1 cup bicarbonate of soda
5 ml coconut oil
Mix the cornflour, citric acid and bicarbonate of soda together in a bowl, then gradually add the coconut oil. Pour half a cup into the bath and watch the water fizz.Tropical spa
I have modified this recipe slightly. The original had lemongrass oil – which I think is not a good idea in a bath! It can act as a dermal sensitiser. I have also included dispersing bath oil to ensue that all the delicious ingredients disperse through the water. This recipe will fill your bathroom with the fragrant delights of the tropics.½ cup low fat coconut milk
1 teaspoon honey
5 drop mandarin essential oil
10 drops ylang ylang essential oil
5 drops sandalwood essential oil
25 ml dispersing bath oil
25 ml coconut oil
Blend all the ingredients together and add approximately 25ml to a bath of warm water.
